The 2023 SATN Social
A huge crowd for the 8:00 AM roll-out! Even more folks showed up throughout the day.
It’s a little funny that Carl moved the SATN Social date this year to avoid bad weather - and it worked - but it ended up being pretty hot. Not the 110 degree scorcher that we had last year, but still unexpectedly warm for this time of year.
Regardless, the event was perfect. A huge crowd, lots of prizes, big sponsor and volunteer support. We had TWELVE riders who ended up finishing all four routes!
This is the fourth iteration of the Social and the east route did have to be modified to avoid the Violet Crown Trail construction project. The ride was organized by Carl and Lynn Zapffe, ATX Bikes, and the route stewards: Scott Champ, Becky Girand, Zack Stirling, and yours truly. I ended up riding the West and South routes for 33 miles, and in the last mile of the ride I had the most unbelivable cramps.
Wylie from Giant helped our recovery in a big way.
Here’s a breakdown of the support for the event:
David from SRAM was there to support the party, and donated 20 razor tooth saws to our SATN Smooth volunteers (below) who ended up putting in over 110 hours of work to prep all 67 miles of trail.
Wylie from Giant cooked chicken tacos for after the ride, and they didn’t last very long! Santa Cruz was there with demo bikes.
Frank from Donut Taco Palace who is a regular on Crank N Drank rides brought donuts, tacos, and kicked in some lift passes for Spider Mountain for the prize raffle! GoodPop donated over 100 popsicles and cans of their new sparkling juice which also completely disappeared after the ride.
Austin Sign Company made the logo and Trail Crew graphic for the event.
Shimano supported with prizes etc.
